The world famous Dominion Theatre - home for more than 11 years to the award winning musical We Will Rock You and host to stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Bill Hayley and Duran Duran - is not the normal working environment for Collaborate. But, having successfully designed the back office and meeting facilities, we were invited to refurbish the champagne bar. It was a chance to let our creative juices flow, obsessing over the smallest details to design a new feature that looked as though it was an intrinsic part of the art deco surroundings. We reflected the golden struts and rosettes of the stairwell to make the new bar look as though it was part of the original design, creating exact replicas of the rosettes and reproducing the precise angles of the banister struts. We took our inspiration for the shape of the central drinks cooler from the shape of a champagne flute, finishing it in polished brass to match the existing lanterns and installing water-tight drip trays to protect the electrics. We introduced a mirrored front, in keeping with the art deco interior, back-plating the mirrors to meet modern health and safety requirements. The bar top and drinks counters were stained to match other wood within the theatre, with lipping round the outside to make them more durable. Finally, we co-ordinated bespoke shutters for the tills to enable them to be locked securely. The result: a brand new champagne bar that tells the story of the Dominion Theatre as an integral part of London's West End since it first opened in 1929.
